I feel like my stance on micro transactions is pretty clearly define by my other posts but I wanted to sorta give a reasoning for it? I don't know why, seeing as no one reads these but it just feels better to have this out in the open. Maybe my views will change some day and I'll be able to go through these as a way of debating with myself. In my perspective, it comes down to two things. One is how you value your time. Think about the gameplay in the Factions server. I can join a new season and grind for hours to get enough money for things, or I can join with a starting 2.5 million and looting 15 sword. It comes down to how you want to spend your time and for me personally, I find the resource gathering more fun when I have something to start from. The other (admittedly basic) argument is that someone can do what they want with their money. It's not really your business, and unless they're borrowing money from you, I personally don't believe in involving yourself in other peoples' financial lives.
Going with the typical criticisms, I've heard a lot of people against micro transactions saying similar, if not the exact same, things: "You don't have real skill, you have to pay to win", someone's economic status doesn't impact their skill. Even if there was a correlation, wouldn't it mean that more money equals more skill? If you consider gaming coaches, the ability to pay other players for more information about the server/game and general lessons on gameplay by paying the other players. "It makes it unfair for new players who can't afford it", In my opinion this is a fair argument. All I can really say is that, yes, that is unfair; And any defense I really have for this argument would be rather rude such as play another game , possibly get a job, or similar arguments. I'm not saying that's what you should do as things happen. People can lose jobs or might be going through a hard patch. In all honesty, I find this argument to be entirely valid and I don't really have a good defense for it.
EULA. Let's cover it. A lot of people think InsanityCraft broke it. Did they? Who knows. But let's cover the common ones so that you at least know (Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with InsanityCraft in any way. At no point was I asked by anyone/anything to create this post. Any and all of the following are strictly my own, unprofessional perspective). Looking through the sections present in the EULA, InsanityCraft doesn't violate any terms set forth by the 'Domain Names and Website', 'Constructed Promotions', 'Video, Streams, and Screenshots', 'Live In-Game Events', 'In-person Events', 'Music and Audio', 'Extended Functionality', 'Books and Other Publications', nor the 'Hand-Crafted' Products sections. This leaves us with only the 'Servers and Hosting' section. Firstly, one I hear quite a bit is... "InsanityCraft breaks Minecraft's guidelines against gambling"; Not really, no. There are Mystery crate keys that can give you a random key(s), but these keys can't be exchange to the server for IRL money, only player-to-player. A commonplace primary argument is that "InsanityCraft's ranks offer an unfair advantage". While I can offer no insight into the other servers, In factions, kits can be taken from dead players, cash is lost each time you die, as is power. Commands gained by the purchase of the rank can only be used outside of competitive scenarios (I.e. /feed, /heal, and /playervault CAN'T be used in player-vs-player combat (This last point applies across the servers offered by InsanityCraft)). These advantages can all be mitigated. Lastly, as a closing argument of mine: Upon discussion with the staff, I for one learned that representatives of Mojang convened with the server owner (JHarris) to go over whether certain concepts were legally allowed to be implemented. Those that could be, were. Those that weren't, weren't.
Figured I'd start posting here! Guess I just feel like this is the one place I can put stuff that would be even remotely long lasting for InsanityCraft. I know that sounds like a diss, but it isn't meant to be. IC has something beautiful about it. Which is why this post is being made actually.
I know the server gets a lot of crap from it's players, but I think it deserves some recognition. I've been in countless voice calls with people who believe InsanityCraft has a lot of potential, and that it's being underutilized. But it isn't. You just need to look carefully. There were attempts to make custom bosses, and unique gear sets that weren't just reclaims. Look at /custombosses and /armorsets if you don't believe me.
I've heard people complain about duels. They used to be laggy and it was fixed. There used to be 1 arena for dueling now there's several. There's even warps set up for each /duel so that players can spectate, no matter which arena yet they're never utilized. Seriously, do /warp Spectate(insert duel arena here) and see for yourself.
When people complained about the withers not having enough health, votes were held to see how much to increase the health by. Yes it was increased by three times it's original amount, but that was done because the player base demanded it. Anything and everything is consulted with the players. The rigged McMMO in favor of axes? That was a vote done with the server, and the people wanted it that way.
I think the most interesting aspect however is a lot of people's complaints about the Pay-to-Win features. They don't mention the events where you can win crate keys, like the building competitions or the haunted houses and puzzles, or the fact that you can win the second highest rank on the factions server with one lucky legendary crate key (I've won it twice). Don't forget that you can win store credit by voting enough, or playing for long enough. Or how if you win a map in Factions, you get store credit, or how if you purchase a single thing, there's a chance you'll win store credit when the monthly goal is met... Besides, 60% of the sales go back into the server. If you think about it, the sales team gets a commission when their code is used, so it helps incentivize the staff to do their job.
Just saying, the server's not all bad.
